The 12 Chakras

12 Chakras

You may be familiar with the 7 major chakras of the human body. But did you know that some chakra systems count 12 or more chakras? In order to enhance your understanding of the energy body, it is essential to know your 12 chakras. Familiarity with the 12 chakra system adds depth, context, and appreciation for your understanding of how chakras work and how to best balance energies in your life.

What Is The 12 Chakra System?

The idea of a 12 chakra system is considered as relatively new. As much as one may appreciate simplicity in learning about the chakras, there is no unique or unified understanding of the 12-chakra system to this day.  The knowledge about the 12 chakras mostly comes from modern perspectives expressed by contemporary healers and energy workers.

Put simply, there are 2 main types of configurations presented in modern healing schools of thoughts: The 12 chakras are located either both inside and outside of the body or all inside:

  • The first one locates 5 additional chakras outside of the human body in addition to the 7 primary chakras. This is the most common way to represent the 12-chakra system, including one chakra below the root chakra and the remaining ones above the crown.
  • Another one includes all 12 chakras inside the human body, positioning 5 additional energy centers in-between the commonly known 7 chakras.

Despite the numerous variations of 12 chakras configurations, it’s important to note that the most commonly referenced energy centers are two additional chakras above the crown and the Earth chakra (or chakra located below the root chakra and the surface of the earth).

The 12 Chakras: Our Connection to the Universe

Simply, the 12-chakra system brings forth the vision of our connection to the entire universe.

The premise of the 12 chakra system is that all living beings are part of a whole.  Each of us is grounded to the earth and linked to the universe via a thin cable. That cable stretches from roughly three feet below your feet to miles and miles up through the atmosphere and on deep into outer space.

Cyndi Dale, energy healer and author of the “Advanced Chakra Wisdom”, emphasizes the 12-chakra system as a way to use a wider range of energies for healing. Using 12 chakras allows us to draw from powerful energies outside of the human body and get in touch with the whole array of dimensions of our human experience.

Even though contemporary healers mention the existence of additional chakras, it’s said that shamanic traditions have used the extraneous chakras or “power centers” for millennia for their healing practices.  In many ancient traditions, earth and sky energies are believed to mix within the human body. The twelve-chakra system is a vivid representation of this belief.

Organization of the 12 Chakra System

Working on the assertion you are already familiar with what a chakra is and the basic seven energy centers, let’s focus on the remaining five introduced in the 12 chakra system. Similar to the format of standard spiritual chakra charts, each one of the five additional chakra possesses their own location, color, and function.

The traditional chakra colors follow the spectrum of the rainbow, while the extended system may add colors associated with metals or other elements. Among them are gold, platinum, and a combination of colors that are sometimes referred to as “opalescence” or “iridescence” for the highest frequencies.

The 8th and 9th chakras are generally represented above the head, and the 10th chakra slightly under the ground. However, we can find descriptions of the twelve chakra system locating the 8th chakra underground and the remaining higher energy centers above the crown.

To sum it up, the number of additional chakras is the same, but the order in which they are presented is slightly different. Below is a presentation of the two main series of 12 chakras with a slight variation where the 8th chakra is interchanged with the 10th chakra between the first and second system.

12 Chakra Chart #1

12 chakra chart
The position of chakra #8 et #9 above the crown chakra is a fairly common representation of the higher chakras. The following chakra chart contains 12 energy centers and locates the “underground” earth chakra in 10th position.

  • 8th chakra – Located slightly above the crown chakra, about 1 inch above it. With the 8th chakra, we enter realms transcending space and time. This energy center is said to open access to parallel universes and lives; it gives access to the realm of the Akashic records and the sphere of potentialities in the making. It is a useful center for shamanic healing and communication with spirit guides.
  • 9th chakra – Located further above the crown chakra, the 9th chakra is said to be the “seat of the soul.” It allows access to your soul’s code or higher purpose. It can be seen as the door to archetypal energies or patterns that play an important role in shaping our destiny.
  • 10th chakra – Located about a foot and a half below the surface of the ground. It ensures our connection with the earth. Because it works primarily with the energies of the earth, it is very physical in nature. It participates to our physical well-being and connects us to the grounding energies of the earth and our environment. Just like the first (or root) chakra, it is useful to heal any bone and bone marrow-related issues. It can also play a role in any DNA-reltated or hereditary issues.
  • 11th chakra – Located outside of the human body, it is said to be accessible through the hands and feet. It makes up and energy field that connects of human sphere of influence to the supernatural. Shamans can use this chakra’s dimension to produce magic and influence the physical with supernatural powers. The 11th chakra emphasizes the mind as a powerful tool to shape matter.
  • 12th chakra – Located on the outskirts of the 12-chakra system, it allows us to stretch beyond our common sphere of understanding into universal unity with all that is. It is said that it’s the chakra of mastery of the soul’s purpose through our human existence.

12 Chakra Chart #2

The second 12 chakra chart we present will include the following centers:

  • Earth chakra — (8th) — Located roughly three feet below into the earth at your feet. — Brown — No matter where you are, the earth chakra keeps you grounded. This chakra anchor harnesses all the pieces of the human puzzle, from DNA to bone and blood. NOTE: Depending on individual interpretation of chakra study, the location of the 8th chakra varies, but its function as grounding chakra epicenter is the same. Additional locations range form between the heart and throat chakras to just above the crown chakra. Another interpretation states the human aura is the 8th chakra; conglomeration of all chakra energy.
  • Lunar chakra — (9th) — Located just above the (7th) sahasrara chakra or crown chakra. — Silver or white — The ninth chakra links you to the energies of the moon. It is the main hub for karmic understanding and channeling that governs intelligence, communication with spirit guides, and funnels information about incarnations.
  • Solar chakra — (10th) — Resides above the ninth chakra. — Gold — Associated with masculine energy, the solar chakra governs your ability to live your dreams. This chakra helps you to focus your will to remove blockages and give your existence purpose.
  • Galactic chakra — (11th) — Located just above the solar chakra. — Mixture of violet, gold and silver — Considered a channel for prophecy, the 11th chakra governs your ability to transcend space and time and allows you to access the Akashic Records, also referred to as the Universe’s cosmic “Book of Life.”
  • Universal chakra — (12th) — Located above the galactic chakra. — Multi-faceted, multi-colored orbs of light — Known as the chakra of Universal Consciousness, the 12th chakra allows you to transcend the mundane to reach Enlightenment and commune with the Divine.

I am happy you’ve covered both 12 chakra systems. Thank you for your honest unbias facts that there are two systems.

  • Brian

Seems the second chakra list contradicts the first list. One has the 10th chakra beneath the feet and the second has the 8th beneath the feet. Just trying to figure out which is which. Thanks for the help!

Very nice info about Chakras. While there are 12 and more Chakras in many school of thoughts, in majority of the cases, the seven main chakras have found prominence. Scientifically, it is still being researched to find the exact significant of Chakras. However, in the world of meditation, seven chakras have a major role.

Thanks again for the info on 12 Chakras.

    Regards,

It has been said that since the coming of the Christ on Earth. Jesus, Buddha and Archangel Michael went with their light bodies into the center of the Sun. Ever since then the twelfth Chakra of every human being is located in the Sun.
Now don’t think weirdly of this statement. It has also been said that Jesus and Buddha are cosmic brothers, which in truth doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Also know that the person Jesus is also just a person like Buddha is and like we are. The Christ however has a different meaning: The Christ is the first human ever…. Hows that? :p
Knowing that we are made in the image of the Universe and knowing that we are on our way to become as obsolete like the Universe… it would be logical to know that the FIRST HUMAN is Omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent and that His presence is in all of us…
Jesus recognised and aknowledged this and so he brought the Christ unto earth.

    Know yourself; know God.

His name is not Jesus, this is bad translation. This inconsistency also makes low minded people fight. I think it would help the ignorance of the western world if they knew the truth of history. His name is Yeshua, Yeshua, Yeshua. Ooh it feels good to say that, think it feel it. You are right on, except his name. Witch is important, his real name has a much deeper meaning than the name given by the slave masters.
Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua Yeshua
      It’s Hebrew, look it up.

Hi, as of recent I learned that my aura or inner light is pearl white… I’ve done some research and from what I understand it’s mostly used for breaking curses and such? Also I’m able to focus my chakra to my palms and force it outward close enough to leave a burn mark in a shape of some symbol that I can’t depict. I know I’m not dreaming it because I have pictures to prove this burn mark. Am I some kind of tool? I don’t understand…

    • kenny

Does it look like the symbol for Om, or Ek Onkaar? I can’t really answer your question but I can say this, that our one and only true purpose as humans is to realize the Lord and live contently in his will. Were you achieve enlightenment and God realization by coming under the protection of a perfect God realized Master and abiding by his teachings your tasks of this world would be clearly understood. A perfect Master is rare. Not all gurus are the same. Perfect Masters are those who have gone farther than the chakras, the astral, causal and supercausal plane and entered the realm of pure spirit without any matter. The realm of Sach Khand and beyond. They are assigned the task by God to take souls back Home. This is the highest form of selfless service, spiritual service which only perfect Masters and realized souls assigned by the Master can do.

wake up and free yourself of from religion. there is no heaven. Stop wasting the precious time you do have alive worrying about what happens after death. nothing happens. you die.

        • kenny

It is not a religion it is the understanding of spirituality. As towards waking up, my friend gently speaking, I’m afraid that it is you who is currently in a slumber, for you haven’t come to the understanding that you are not the body that dies physically nor are you the mind or emotions but you are the spirit that gives life to the body and the energy for the mind’s actions. To walk on the spiritual path you need to keep your mind and body pure and should be amongst like minded people as who you are around will have a effect on you. That is why it is good to meet people who are truly spiritual and can share their wisdom. By living an ethical life, which is the stepping stone to spirituality, and loving all, and practicing meditation in remembrance of the Lord one can awaken himself to higher planes of consciousness that exist within. The portal lies at the third eye, the seat of the soul. God is found within not without. He is present everywhere but to see him without you must first have self realization and find him within yourself. I hope this helps you gain a better understanding of spirituality and lets you realize that it is in fact the complete opposite of waste of precious time but in fact the only thing that will bring fruit to your life, for you have come here only to go back to God for the Kingdom of Heaven is your true Home. Where we are now is a temporary arena for where we have to play our roles in this world. Hear the call from above as the Lord is seeking the Divine Lover who will catch hold of his call for he will take that soul Home. We must do our part though and tread the path of spirituality with the correct understanding. God loves us all. The human birth is a precious gift. Don’t waste it my friend for you never know when you will receive it again.

Interesting, I’m just looking at the light spectrum (I like to check in with physics to confirm or understand these things), and, it’s true that the visible light spectrum is small compared to the entire electromagnetic spectrum.  There are in fact wavelengths of light such as radio waves and infr-red waves which are above the typical “rainbow” band which we have here in the 7 chakras already, and there are also wavelengths BELOW the rainbow band of visible light–ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma.  What “color” they are is I suppose open to interpretation since I guess they do not fall into the described colors which we already know.  But I think that science confirms the existence of chakras beyond the 7, I also think it’s an area still to be explored, especially whether we can control them or not.  I don’t really like the idea of being able to “control” God, though, I know it is much more complex than that!!!

  • Brandi

I think they are part of another plane, I think I was shown them and I had such confusion because I didn’t know much about chakras and when I tried researching afterwards I wasn’t finding what I saw. I made a picture but it won’t let me attach it here. Also, I’m finding I don’t have many people I can discuss this with :-/

    • Caleb

Hi Brandi! I had just recently met a healer who was helping me start to work with energy and energy balancing. She and I started to discuss chakras at one point which lead to us moving into the 11th chakra. I my self, not knowing much about these either did not understand much of what she was saying at first. She then started to go into detail and further more why they had chosen that Chakra for me to focus and or work on? i am not sure yet. I stay in close contact with this healer so any questions you have i can relay them to her or put you in contact with her through email or something. Also anything you would like to discuss i am open and more than willing to listen too 🙂

I have been working hard on my homework as I want to become a Reiki healing master.
There are actually 250 Chakra points.
There is so much to learn about Enlightenment & I have a very long way to go.
When I began to buy my healing stones (crystals) I was very dissapointed to learn that that some people sell Heat treated Amethyst as Citrine.
Some sell knowing that this is the case & some out of ignorance.
Nearly ALL Citrine is of more toward the green spectrum, not the orange yellow we are led to believe. So eyes peeled @_@
Just keep the LOVE & LIGHT with & around you guys. May your healing go back into the world & walk every step with you.
        Blessings

        PEACE <3 <3 <3 <3
Praise God & keep the FAITH

I am just so surprised to see that there are 12 chakras! and there are 2 more just above the crown chakra….as i have experienced a chakra color of silver twinkles which i believe that it could be the 11th or 12th Chakra color? I wish i could have someone acknowledge that this is true…but if no one can’t then i will just leave it to my human experience of what i see from my third eye and share it.
