The Solar Plexus chakra is the third chakra. It is associated with the expression of will, power, mental abilities, and personal responsibility. Its element is fire and as such, its energy is characterized by transmutation and heat. The Solar Plexus chakra is directed by the principle of power and the intellect.

The third chakra is referred to as:

The most common Sanskrit name for the Solar Plexus chakra is “Manipura”, which means “city of jewels” or “seat of gems”. The word “nabhi” translates as “navel”.
Solar Plexus chakra color
The Solar Plexus chakra is most commonly represented with the color yellow. Since it’s associated with the element of fire, it is also sometimes depicted with the color yellowish red.
Solar Plexus chakra symbol
The symbol of the Solar Plexus chakra is composed of:
- A circle with ten petals
- An downward-pointing triangle
The inverted triangle represents the fire element and the transformative power of this energy center. Fire turns matter into energy that can be used to propel, move forward.
The ten petals are often represented with the color blue, like the blue color of the flame. Each of them is said to be the representation of either the ten pranas or the ten mental afflictions that may affect the solar plexus chakra (jealousy, shame, fear, ignorance, treachery, foolishness, envy, shame, delusion, disgust).
Solar Plexus chakra location
The most commonly accepted location for the third chakra is between the navel and the lower part of the chest, at the solar plexus level. That’s why it’s often referred to as the “solar plexus chakra”. Some traditions place it more loosely in the navel area.
The solar plexus chakra is connected to the digestive system, especially the gastric and hypogastric plexi, which help matter into energy to fuel your body. The pancreas is a gland commonly associated with it. This chakra governs metabolism, especially with regards to the process of carbohydrates.
Behavioral characteristics of the Solar Plexus chakra
The Solar Plexus chakra is associated with the following psychological and behavioral functions:
- Expression of the will
- The “accounting mind” that categorizes and counts everything
- Personal power
- Establishing ideas and plans into reality
The solar plexus chakra main function is to provide energy to move forward and realize desires and intentions. It is at the base of the development of personal power. This energy center feeds one’s direction in life and the actions taken in order to reach your goals. It’s also central in the preoccupations about social status and how one shows herself to others.
One challenge with the solar plexus chakra is to find balance between asserting your personal power in this world and controlling or being ruled by your will or other’s.
Solar Plexus chakra imbalance
When the Solar Plexus chakra is balanced, you are assertive and exert your will in a way that leads to results and harmonious relationship with your surrounding.
Imbalance in the Solar Plexus chakra can manifest as:
- Excessive control and authority over your environment and people
- Or the opposite in case of deficiency or blockage in the sacral chakra: Feeling of helplessness, irresponsibility
- Seeing and living through a “spreadsheet” of plus and minuses while losing sight of the whole picture
- Being manipulative
- Misusing power
- Lack of clear direction, lack of purpose or ambition
- Making plans or having a lot of ideas without finding a way to realize them
