By definition, it is an energy-based, electromagnetic field that surrounds the human body and all living things. Extending an estimated three feet out in all directions, the oval-shaped aura consists of seven layers that correspond to the body’s basic seven chakras.

What is an aura?

Before we explore the correlation between the aura and chakras, let’s talk about the seven “auric” layers. Each one serves a function and governs specific elements associated with human existence:

  • Physical auric body — physical sensation — overall health and the ability to feel pleasure and pain
  • Etheric auric body — emotions — self-acceptance, self-esteem, self-love
  • Vital auric body — rational mind — level-headedness and clear understanding
  • Astral body — emotions and desires — interpersonal relationships
  • Lower mental auric body — intellect and Divine will — power to speak truth
  • Higher mental auric body — Divine love — home of the “higher self”; accessibility to Universal knowledge
  • Spiritual body — direct link to the Divine — nourishes body with energy to sustain life

Association of Aura Colors with Chakras

It is said that as the vibration of sound loses density and intensifies in frequency, it manifests as color. This is the principle on which the body’s chakra system is based. Each of the basic seven chakras vibrates at a distinct frequency and exhibits its own color. The human aura operates in the same fashion.

The vibration of the aura can appear in a range of colors similar to those of the chakras. However, unlike chakras, auric colors can appear in a variety of shades and varying densities.

The basic seven auric colors, their physical association, and aura color meaning are:

  • Red — physical body — deep to bright, clear red in color; may also appear in shades of pink/red, bright pink, and red with hints of orange — Associated with friction, anger, negativity and anxiety.
  • Orange — reproductive organs — all shades of orange and may be tinted with yellow — Associated with vigor, courage, good health, and adventurousness.
  • Yellow — spleen — may range from bright, pure yellow to a muddied gold — Associated with optimism, playfulness, and intelligence.
  • Green — heart and lungs — all shades from bright, tropical to deep forest green — Associated with balance, maturity, and love.
  • Blue — thyroid and throat — soft, light blue to deep, muted royal blue — Associated with being “calm and collected,” intuitive, and caring.
  • Indigo — pituitary gland — may blend blue, violet and silver — Associated with intuitiveness and emotional sensitivity.
  • Purple — pineal gland and nervous system — all shades from deepest violet to lavender — Associated with intuition, clairvoyance, psychic ability.

It is at this point, auric colors branch out to include silver, white, and black — each indicative of positivity, purity, and negativity respectively.

How to Read Auras Around People

Seeing auras and aura reading takes practice.

When reading auras, it is best to focus on their Third Eye, the area just above and between the eyes. Using your peripheral vision, concentrate on the immediate area surrounding the person. The longer you concentrate the brighter and more distinguishable the aura should become, such as a blue aura or green one.

Representation of Auras in Spiritual Traditions

For millenia spiritual traditions across the world have recognized the existence of the human aura — although they may not call it by name. Some depict it as a halo, such as is found in Christianity, and in Egyptian and Roman cultures, while others illustrate it as radiating from the body, such as in Buddhist and Hindu faiths.
