Everything is made of energy. The Universe. Humans. All life. When that energy becomes impaired or disrupted, which inevitably happens every now and again, subtle emotional and/or physical changes can occur. To regain balance, people often choose to consult with an energy healer. Yes, an energy healer.
Who are Energy Healers?

Energy healers are individuals who are formally trained in the use of holistic approaches to restore balance to an individual’s mental, emotional, physical and spiritual bodies. Essentially, energy healing is the sending out of positive energy to affect change.
Considered a form of alternative medicine or holistic healing, energy healing may be sought for a range of maladies from depression and chronic back pain to remedying the adverse effects of long-term medical treatment, such as chemo or radiation therapy.
To an extent, energy healing is subjective. You must be open to receiving help from the energy healer. Beneficial aspects of healing energy require consistency in thought and action.
You Are Energy
The notion that the body is comprised of pure energy is a widely accepted fact — proven by quantum physics. As with any form of pure energy, the human body sends off subtle vibrations. Generally speaking, this energy is only detectable when it falls out of sync — and it is the effects of this disruption that are felt, not necessarily the energy itself.
So what can throw the body’s delicate energy out of balance? Several things.
Internal turmoil can adversely affect one’s energy balance. Oftentimes, these elements include:
- anxiety and/or phobias
- fear
- biochemical imbalance
- depression
However, more obvious culprits for energy disruption are frequently external, such as:
- inconsistent or poor nutrition
- poor posture
- environmental stressors and toxins
- chronic or long-term illness

Energy Medicine
Various modalities of energy healing techniques include Tai Chi, Reiki, Reflexology, Homeopathy, Flower Essences, and Acupuncture. Some tools used by energy healers include crystals, herbs, healing stones and hands-on healing.
Another approach is distance healing. The basic premise of this type of energy healing states that time and space are illusionary, therefore, the energy healer need not be present to affect change in the person seeking the healing. All that is required is intense focus/visualization on behalf of the healer and an openness to the healing energy by the recipient.
Regardless of the approach, or modality, the objective of energy healing is to align the body’s chakra system — which consists of eight chakras, or energy centers, that stretch from the area of the base of the spine up to the crown of the head.
Energy Healer Training
The number of energy healing schools available are as varied as their specialties. From online courses to weekend retreats and formal institutions, it is important to do research when looking for the program that is best for you.
Becoming an energy healer can take as little as a few weeks to as much as several months or years depending on the type of training you are seeking. For instance, if you’re looking to become a Reiki master, anticipate committing to a year of consistent study at minimum.
