The stress of keeping up with the fast pace of society can wreak havoc on your body’s energy centers, or chakras. As the need for energy healing grows, so does the demand for energy healers, such a reiki masters. Practioners who offer reiki therapy sessions are often reiki masters, even though people with minimal training can often also be qualified in helping others with energy healing. What makes a Reiki master different? Here are some answers.

What is a Reiki Master?

Reiki Master

Individuals who have studied reiki and worked their way through its three levels may continue studying to become a reiki master; one who exhibits strict dedication to the study and practice of reiki healing.

It is important to understand, being a reiki master is a continuous, life-long process.

As reiki masters continue their study and spiritual growth, the reiki healing they offer becomes more enhanced.

Reiki Master Training

As practitioners go through reiki attunement, or graduation, from one level to the next, it isn’t what you might consider a normal graduation. Since it is essentially an oral tradition, a significant bond is established between student and teacher. That bond is then passed from the new teacher to his students and so on.

During training, the teacher “channels” attunement energies through the student, which opens specific chakras, namely the palm, heart and crown chakras — the key energy centers used in reiki healing. One is considered a reiki master after his third (or, in some cases, fourth) attunement.

Reiki Master Symbols

Some reiki practitioners include the use of symbols, which are visualized or hand-drawn in the air over the individual being healed. There are three basic symbols used for reiki healing:

  • Power
  • Emotional/mental blockages
  • Distance healing

Reiki masters incorporate a set of more intricate and sacred symbols, known as Usui Reiki. These symbols, which couple Sanskrit and Japanese in their character composition, are part of an oral tradition reserved for second and third-degree reiki practitioners.

How to Become a Reiki Master

Depending on how intensively you study reiki to become a reiki energy healer, there are several options for study, from weekend retreats to programs that last several weeks and months. However, to become a Usui reiki master, anticipate dedicating a year of your life (at minimum) to study and practice.

When searching for a reiki program and choosing a teacher, do your homework to find the one that is the best fit for you and your intentions as a potential energy healer.
